About SOMA

SOMA is an architecture and urban design practice founded by Lina Bareikytė Dumčiuvienė, Povilas Dumčius and Donatas Žvirblys, with studios in Copenhagen and Vilnius.

In biology, soma is the body of a cell, its living core where information comes together and connections are formed. We see architecture in a similar way, as a framework that brings together people, place, nature, culture and everyday life.

We work with what is already there, the character of a place, its landscape, history, structures and communities, and use it as a starting point for something new. We believe good architecture does not need to be loud to be distinctive. It should feel natural to its context, generous to its users and relevant long after it is built.

Our work moves across scales, from interiors and buildings to public spaces and urban strategies. We are particularly interested in the spaces in between, where buildings meet the city, where landscape becomes architecture and where everyday encounters shape the identity of a place.

SOMA brings together more than 15 years of experience from architectural practice in Denmark, Lithuania and internationally. Before establishing SOMA, its founders worked on and led projects across architecture, urban development, transformation and public space within established Nordic practices. This experience has shaped an approach that combines Nordic design culture with a close understanding of local context.

Today, SOMA works independently and in collaboration with architects, landscape designers, engineers, artists and other specialists. Like the network of connections that gives SOMA its name, we see the studio as a place where different knowledge, disciplines and perspectives come together to create thoughtful and lasting architecture.
